Chiltern finish season in style

Aylesbury 3XV 7 - 34 Chiltern 3XV

Chiltern (22) 34
Tries:
Sanford, Richardson B (2), Long, Smith
Cons: Nicholls 3
Drop goal: Schrauwers T

Aylesbury (0) 7
Tries: 1
Cons: 1

The 3s finished a great second half of the season, with a 34 - 7 win away at Aylesbury.

Today's team, had, Bobbett, Long and Shanks in the front row, Fischer (G) and Gibson in second row and a back row of Lawson, Smith  and Kent. Half backs were Jarrold (S) and Nichols, centres Fischer (N) and  Richardson (B), on the wings were McHugh and Sandford and Schrauwers (T) at fullback. Second half appearances by John Hughes and Paul Sitzberger ensured a comfortable victory.

The pack dominated up front, making the scrum a strong platform, providing solid ball for the backline to thrive on, unfortunately the lineout didn't work as well as usual. The big advantage was the ability of the chiltern 15 to turn over ball, probably due to fact that 7 players on the pitch were more used to the back row than the positions they were allocated today.

The first half saw Chiltern score three tries, the first by Mike Sandford finishing off a wide move on left wing, the second was scored by Dangerous (Brian Richardson) again finishing off a good period of Chiltern play, and the last was by Rob Long, driving over from about 5 yards. Dougal Nichols managed to convert a couple, and the half was finished by a long range drop goal from Yogi's brother Tim, who had a great game a 15, not only defending well, but coming up effectively into the attacking line. The half finished with score 22-0 to Chiltern, and would be best summed up by a solid performance by the pack, excellent defence across the pitch, and ruthless turnovers led by Nick Fisher in the centre which denied Aylesbury any effective possession, ensuring Chiltern spent most of the game, in Aylesbury 22.

The second half started off with a some positive play, by Aylesbury resulting in their only try of the game. A change in the front row saw Shanks replace skipper Rob Long at 2 and Chips coming up to tight head, and as Aylesbury pack tired the Chiltern pack, drove them off the ball several times, ensuring Chiltern were able to regain the upper hand in possession, and resulting in another move creating a second try for Dangerous. Chiltern completed a five try haul when Darren Smith broke off a driving maul to score. A word must go to Aylesbury who were generous hosts and competed well throughout the game, another word must also go the young man who refereed  today's game Joel Taylor, only just 18, a good performance, good luck to Joel just starting out on refereeing career, however for many us on the pitch today it is worrying when the ref looks so young.

Today's man of the match was one of the Fischer twins, Nick, inventive and strong running in centre, tremendous defence and the volume of  turnover ball he supplied was awesome, well done Nick, special mentions must also go Tim at 15 and twin brother Graham, at 4 both had great games.

So that's it for 2007 / 2008, as the Aylesbury 1st team coach commented after the game today, 'If you guys had managed to get this side out  for the first few games you would have won this league by miles' so that's our  challenge for next season lads, lets get out for every game, and deliver what we are capable of.

Let me finish with a special mention to our skipper, Rob Long, who works tirelessly to get the great teams out for Chiltern, thank you Rob.

Its been a pleasure to play with this squad this season, and I look forward to the 08 / 09 season.

League leaders unbeaten run finished by Chiltern llls
Amersham 3XV 21-17 Bicester 2XV

Chiltern 21

Cons: Richardson Dave

Bicester 17
Tries: 3
Cons: 1

Bicester visited Ash grove today, unbeaten this season, already having achieved promotion, but failed to complete an unbeaten season, due to excellent performance by Chiltern this afternoon.

The side today, had Gary Holmes at loose head, with Long and Lawson completing the front row, Griffiths and Cooke in the second row, and an awesome  back row, of Richard Dobby, Darren Smith and silver fox, John Hughes. Brian Winson was at 9, and a warm up injury to Killer, meant a late move from left  wing to fly half for Scott Jarrold, Tom Fletcher took Scott's place on the  wing and the rest of the back line resembled one of Chiltern best teams, with Gez Rowland, Chris Luker and the Richardson bothers, Brain and David. The subs bench had some power as well, Charlie Rennie, Ryan Lee, Rich Bobbett, and Andy Heiron.

A competitive first half saw Chiltern dominate possession,  creating a 10 - 0 lead, with an opening penalty converted by Dave Richardson, and sublime move by the backs, was finished by Chris Luker going under the posts, and a conversion by Dave Richardson.

The second half started in same way, with lots of Chiltern possession, and Bicester testing the referees patience, giving more penalty  opportunities to Dave Richardson, pushing the score out to 16 - 0. Eventually Bicester showed that some of the form that has given them promotion this season, snatching a loose ball, and running in a try, 16 - 5. A second try from Bicester gave them some late hope as the game entered the  last 10 minutes with the score at 16 - 10, however a penetrating move by the Chiltern forwards and quick ball passed across the backs to the right wing Brian Richardson, effectively finished the game off at 21 - 10, despite a late charge by Bicester after the referee had called last play meant the final  score was 21 - 17.

A well fought game, by probably the best two teams in the BBO second division, finished in good spirits with Bicester enjoying their promotion, and Chiltern celebrating a well deserved victory. Chiltern llls have one more match this season, away at local rivals Aylesbury next saturday.

So finally today's man of the match, was awarded to Rob Long, not just another good day on the pitch, but also in recognition of his efforts for the second half of the season, as Captain, his relentless emails and texts  making sure the best 15 players get out on the pitch every week, well done  Rob!!

So Near Yet So Far!!

Chipping Norton 7 - 5 Chiltern 3XV
29th March 2008

Chiltern 5
Tries: Kent

Chipping Norton 7
Tries:
 1
Cons: 1

Chiltern 3s made the long journey to Chipping Norton today, on a wet and windy saturday afternoon, and narrowly lost in tight game 7 - 5. The best way of summing up today's performance is a missed opportunity, despite Chipping fielding a strong squad of 24 players, many of their university players  back at home, Chiltern played bravely throughout, dominating significant periods of the game, but not converting that pressure into points.

Today's side, had a strong pack, with Bobbett, Long and Rennie in front  row, Griffiths and Schrauwers in second row, with a back row of Darren Smith making his debut (brother John is a member of our U17s squad) with Lawson and Kent. The backs were Winson at 9, Nicholls at 10, Perera and Richardson (Brian) in Centre, Wings were Allen and Sanford, and Jarrold (Scott) at fullback.

The game was played in awful conditions, driving rain and howling gale persisted for much of afternoon, Chipping started brightly pushing Chiltern into 22 for first 5 minutes, but the Chiltern side defended well, and started to push Chipping back up the game against the prevailing wind, spending much of the remainder of the half in the Chipping 22. Eventually the pressure  brought a result with a clinical lineout catch and drive resulting in Yogi going over the line, only to discover the referee was  unsighted and brought play back
for a five yard scrum. Despite more  pressure, snatched passes, dropped balls, and some decision making by Chiltern  kept the score 0 - 0 at half time.

The second half saw Silver Fox join the back row as a substitute, and Chiltern started well, with the wind taking game straight back at  Chipping, a couple of surging runs, by Griffiths, Kent and Hughes, and some  great penetrating moves by Brian Richardson put the pressure on, this eventually led to the opening try, when Chiltern drove a maul into the opposition 22, for Charlie Kent to
drive over the line, 0 - 5 to Chiltern, unfortunately the  conversion was missed. Chipping seemed to wake up and started to put pressure on Chiltern who defended bravely in their own 22 for 15 minutes, eventually one  driving run too many, meant Chiltern had run out of defenders, and Chipping drove over close to the pots to take the lead 7 - 5.

The for much of the remainder of the game Chiltern put pressure on Chipping, but failed again to convert this pressure into points, one scrum five yards out should have resulted in a push over try, however the ball was  spun out to the backs only for them to knock-on. A day of missed opportunities  and the final result of hard fought game in poor conditions was 7 - 5 to  Chipping.

Chiltern 3s loose their unbeaten run, but the final two games are big ones, home to league leaders Bicester on saturday 12th April and the final game  away at Aylesbury on 19th.

Today's man of the match, was Darren Smith making his debut for Chiltern at 7, putting in a huge number of tackles, and winning turnover ball regularly, a great performance, and a player I look forward to seeing in Chiltern side for many years to come.

Well done to all 16 players on a wet and miserable afternoon, making that long journey out to Chipping Norton, to play a strong side, and come so  close.

3XV win against third in the league Milton Keynes

Chiltern III XV 60 - 5 Milton Keynes III XV
8th March 2008

Chiltern 60
Tries:
Dobbie, Hughes (2), Lawson, Morgan (2), Porter (2), Richardson, Winson
Cons: Nicholls (5)

Milton Keynes 5
Tries: 1

Chiltern 3rds fielded what is probably the biggest and most experienced pack to be assembled at Weedon Lane for a number of years. This resulted in a dominant performance against a brave yet resilient Milton Keynes side which never gave up and kept going to the last minute getting the reward of a consolation try.

The game started in ominous fashion with the Chiltern Pack securing good early ball and rumbling up the field with every opportunity which released veteran centre Richardson on a number of powerful runs resulting in an early try for Porter on the wing.

There then followed a period of sustained forward pressure with 6 consecutive scrums on the Milton Keynes 5 mtr line. MK battled hard and held out with no points awarded due to a number of handling and technical infringements by Chiltern.

The pack was working well and at every opportunity the MK pack was marched backwards with the subsequent pick and drive by the back row of Dobie, Lawson ans Hughes. This tactic resulted in yet another 2nd phase move with Richardson breaking the gain line and setting up a second try for Porter .

The forward dominance was starting to wear down MK and more pressure in the scrum through front row of Holmes, Long and Rennie allowed scrum half Winson to pick up and drive blind deflecting a number of tackles, and then adding some extra pace to out run the covering defence and score a superb try.

The teams turned around at half time with Chiltern needing to keep up the pressure. This was achieved by a text book move from the kick off. Nicholls kicked off high and just over 10mtrs, the ball was won by the pack and they drove hard towards the 22, with the ball at the pack Hughes broke off in typical fashion and powered under the posts for a remarkable try.

Continued pressure and dominance in the contact areas was rewarded with gazelle like breaks from Rennie and Gibson and more tries coming from Dobbie, Lawson and Hughes.

A special thank you to David Morgan who was celebrating Wales winning the Triple Crown and was well into his second pint of beer when Chris Preston hobbled into the bar and asked if he would mind standing in. Dave lept into gear and after only 25 minutes on the field had two Shane Williams like tries under his belt. Thanks Dave and a big thank you from all the team!!

After a huge team performance, played with great spirit, it was difficult to choose a man of the match but on a day of forward dominance the award was finally given to double try scorer Jon Hughes for his outstanding efforts.

A mention should go to the Milton Keynes team who never gave up or resorted to darker tactics when they were under so much pressure which resulted in a very enjoyable game to play in and to watch.

On a windy day Stow were blown away

Stow on the Wold III XV 12 - 43 Chiltern III XV
1st March 2008

Chiltern 43
Tries:
Bobbett, Feaver (2), Kent, Porter, Richardson D, Sanford
Cons: Nicholls (3), Richardson D

Wow, what an exciting day, for the club: all three teams won this  afternoon, and for your intrepid match reporter: not only scoring his first try  of the season, but unfortunately finished up in Stoke Mandeville, all's ok I'm  glad to say, nothing some glue and few stitches couldn't sort out.

The Chiltern 3rds went all the way out to Stow on the Wold today, only to find that Stow had their second team game cancelled, so a rather young  looking opposition took to the field, however Chiltern scored seven tries,  winning very comfortably 43 - 12.

The pack, consisting of Bobbett, Long and Shanks, in the front  row, Gibson and Sandford at locks, and Preston, Bissex and Kent in the back  row; the scrum never looked in danger, winning all Chiltern ball and putting  pressure on the opposition put in, however Chiltern completely dominated the  lineout, with Sandford jumping at 4 securing all Chiltern ball, and Preston  jumping at 2 stealing opposition ball, three of the seven tries came from  lineouts today, Charlie Kent and myself scoring from catch and drive moves, and Mike Sandford snagging a loose opposition ball to score.

The backs, with Winson and Nicholls at half back, Pete Solman making his  club debut alongside Brian Richardson in the centre, Porter and Feaver on the wings and Dave Richardson at 15. Brian Feaver bagged a couple of tries, with the other winger Ty Porter picking up one, and Dave Richardson bulldozing  over a tap penalty for the other try, four conversions completed scoring,  three from Dougal Nicholls and one from big Dave!

A word must go the opposition who never gave up, and finished the first  half with a well deserved try after a sustained period of pressure, and then later in the second half despite having their scrum shunted back 5  yards over their goal line managed to kick the ball away chased well  to the other end of pitch, grabbing a second try.

The game finished a few minutes prematurely when yours truly clashed heads with Mike Sandford in a tackle, and opened up my forehead, neither team  felt the need to play the last few minutes with uncontested scrums. I was  delighted to hear from Rob Long our skipper that today's man of the match was  myself, the sympathy vote I think!

Next week we have a home game versus third place Milton Keynes, now if  after reading these reports of the successes of the third team, you fancy  putting those boots on, give Rob Long a call. So that's the end of today's  match report, well done to all three Chiltern teams, by the way did I  mention I scored a great try!

3s continue their awesome winning run, unbeaten in last seven games!

Chiltern III XV 64 - 0 Witney IV XV
16th February 2008

Chiltern 64
Tries:
Bond (2), Luker C (3), Nicholls, Porter, Rennie, Smith (2)
Cons: Nicholls (7)

Today the 3s thrashed Witney 64 - 0, scoring 10 tries, and 7 conversions by fly half Dougal Nichols, seeing them continue the steady climb up  the table to seventh, with the leagues second best points difference.

The team dominated all over the park, to ensure a comfortable win, with five tries each half, a great welcome for debut players Martin  Kowalewski on the wing and Matt Smith at 8, who also managed to bag a couple of tries. A couple of South African's from the wanderers game at Christmas also played - Brian Wilson and Ty Porter, and a welcome return to prop Charlie Rennie.

Despite some late changes, with the higher teams needing players at the last minute, skipper Rob Long managed to put together a strong side, Bobbett, Long and Rennie in front row, Bond and Gibson providing a powerful second row, Cooke, Bowe and Smith at back row, half backs, Wilson and Nichols, in centre the predator - Luker, and Killingley, wings, Kowalewski, and Porter, fullback Mowatt, and Mark Underwood came as replacement for Bowe in the second half.

Witney had no response today to power of Chiltern, however they did manage to compete for parts of game, notable 10 minutes each side of half time. The Chiltern forwards won most set piece ball, and competed well in loose, marshalled by their scrumhalf, the backs ran some great lines to penetrate, and good support play by all 15 players ensured continuity, and ultimately many Chiltern tries, the ten were scored in no particular order by Matt Smith x 2, Dougal Nichols, Ty Porter, Charlie Rennie, Chris Luker x 3, and Charlie Bond x 2.

Competition for man of the match was strong, good performances all over the park, Charlie Rennie returning at tight head, made some strong runs, especially for the try, driving over after some good forwards play; Chris Luker making those penetrating runs that we are accustom too through the middle of the pitch, and managing to score a hat trick of tries; Charlie Bond, as always competing strongly in the lineout, and running along the wing for 40 metres to score one of his two tries; however the final decision has gone in favour of Matt Smith, making his club debut at 8, he seemed to be everywhere on the pitch today, tackling, running, turning ball over and scoring two tries, no doubt our man of the match!

The 3s are next out on 1st March, an away game in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Team

1 Bobbett, 2 Long, 3 Rennie, 4 Bond, 5 Gibson, 6 Cooke, 7 Bowe, 8 Smith, 9 Winson, 10 Nicholls, 11 Porter, 12 Killingley, 13 Luker C, 14 Kowalewski, 15 Mowat 16 Underwood

Mighty 3rd XV leave Wycombe seeing stars

Chiltern pack put the squeeze on Wycombe deep in their twenty-two

Chiltern All Stars take on second in the league Wycombe and return victorious.

On a wet and windy day in Wycombe, Chiltern continued their impressive unbeaten run of games beating the second in table side 20 points to 5. Liam Gilhooly and Matt Lawson (Chips) made welcome returns after long periods of injury, both completing 40 minutes without problems, which is even more good news for the club.

A solid pack performed well throughout the match competing against a well drilled Wycombe eight, especially in scrums and open play, however the lineout needs some attention before next weeks' home match against Bletchley. The class of Chiltern backs, clearly shone throughout the game, as you would expect with a starting line-up, of Steve Fowler and Dougal Nicholls at half back, the pairing of Brian Richardson and Gez Rowland in the centre, with Liam Gilhooly on the right wing, Scott Jarrold on the left, and mercurial talent of Dave Richardson at 15, Wycombe never really stood a chance!

The scoring was opened by break by the centres' on the right hand side, and the pace of Liam Gilhooly snatching a loose ball to score, completed by a long distance conversion from Brain Richardson to make the score 0 - 7. Wycombe fought their way back into match by turning over an ambitious quick penalty from Liam Gilhooly in his own 22, bringing the score to 5 -7. A good first half was completed by the best move of the match with Chiltern securing good scrumage ball, passing along the line on the right, winning quick second phase, and bringing the ball back through some superb handling for Scott Jarrold to convert the overlap in left hand corner, half time score of 5 -12.

Wycombe put on a gutsy performance in second half, often to see their hard gained yards being negated by a long distance clearances from the Chiltern 10 or 15. As the game continued, Chiltern were awarded a penalty in front of the post and Dougal Nicholls made sure of the kick to take the score to a comfortable 5 -15. Late on, another good period of attacking play and safe hands resulted in Scott Jarrold securing his second try sliding in the corner, final score 5 -20.

The only negative note was a cut on head for Charlie Kent, bravely diving on a loose ball and catching a stray boot, unfortunately Charlie had to be taken by ambulance to the local hospital, but as we have come to expect from Charlie's contibution over the years for Chiltern, he was more concerned about getting off the pitch so we could win the game, then getting proper treatment, the whole team wish a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing on the pitch in the near future, maybe with a scrum cap next time, we must thank the Wycombe second team physio who came over to ensure Charlie was looked after. Also a special mention Brian Feaver who with the spirit that is only seen in Rugby, came on for the Wycombe in the last 10 minutes, as injuries saw them depleted to 14 players, well done Brian.

Despite the obvious talents on show in back line today, for me man of the match was the Chiltern Flanker - Harry Orgee who seemed to be every breakdown, disrupting Wycombe ball, made a number of great tackles, showed some deft handling skills and even took over as jumper when Charlie left the pitch to secure much overdue lineout possession.

So to next week, we look forward to the visit of Bletchley to Ash Grove, all players need to ensure their availability as we also we have four matches on 26th. Let's keep our unbeaten run going to the end of the season.

Gibbo decides to change the direction of the maul.

Second Row Mike Griffiths claimed 10 points in an impressive display to keep their unbeaten record on track.

Dougal Nicholls kicked a try from Pete Gibson and a penalty mid way through the second half.

The forwards combination played well with every player giving his utmost. The experience in the team lead to domination in the scrums and lineouts giving the Chiltern players plenty of ball.

The backs didn't let their forwards down, with the deadly combination of Killer and Dangerous pairing up well in the centres, the first try came from a well worked move with Dangerous being stopped just short of the try line. Luckily Mikey was close in support taking the pass from Dangerous before he went to ground to score in the corner.

Gibbo extended the lead minutes later after sustained pressure from a Chiltern driving maul. Close to the Winslow try line Gibbo broke free to score a well worked try.

Graham and Nick Fischer, freshly back from Durham University, were eager to put on the claret and white jersey's. The brothers, playing in the backrow together, had exceptional games with both making blistering runs, breaking down the Winslow defence on numerous occasions.

The third try came from winger, David Morgan, breaking through a tackle to score under the posts. Unfortunately the referee had eyes like a hawk, spotted some crossing earlier in the play and disallowed the points.

Mikey touched down his second try just before the interval, again with good hands in the backs the ball was stopped yards from the try line. Mikey recovered the ball to score in the corner.

At the begining of the second half, the Winslow boys hit back through their winger, reducing the deficit to 7-17, but the game was effectively over when Charlie Kent scored late in the second half, breaking away from a very well worked driving maul, sealing the comfortable win.
