Chiltern in sensational first away win

Weston-Super-Mare 22 - 24 Amersham & Chiltern

In a pulsating game, Amersham & Chiltern came back from 22-7 down with three great second-half tries to gain a memorable victory over 4th placed Weston-Super-Mare – and secure five priceless league points.

The A&C team looked in great shape even after the long coach trip and started with a bang. After just five minutes, a sweeping move and sleight of hand from man of the match Craig Webb saw Dwayne Polataivao run in under the post for the first try, converted by Ross Bugden. But Weston are not near the top of the table for nothing and gradually asserted themselves with a penalty and two tries in the first half to lead 15 -7 at the interval. Another drive over the A&C line early in the second half saw Weston score their third try which was duly converted. The home supporters thought they were home and dry.

But this new Chiltern team is growing in self-belief and determination. Gradually, it took control in the forwards with great driving play and quick ruck ball to enable the lively backs to pressurise the Weston defence. A superb break by centre Craig Webb saw the ball recycled twice for scrum-half Dwayne Polataivao to score his second try. Although the conversion from the touchline was missed, Chiltern went straight back from the restart. Powerful prop Rhys Cadogan set up quick ball, then four pairs of hands later saw Brad Reeve given enough space to race over for a try converted by Ross Bugden.

Back came Weston but the Chiltern defence never wavered and a break out by Chris Jacks and Pete Johnston, on as a replacement for Jack Perkins after only 15 minutes, saw the ball moved backwards and forwards to give Jerry Rice the space to use his speed for a brilliant try in the corner. Chiltern were now ahead and despite a nail biting last five minutes held on for a memorable victory. Make no mistake, Weston-Super-Mare are a very decent team and the victory shows just how far Amersham & Chiltern have come this year.

Next Saturday 26 November, Chiltern entertains Bletchley in the Bucks Cup semi final at Weedon Lane. Kick-off is 2pm and admission is free.
